The Texas Trust CU is super excited to welcome Rubén Blades and his band on Wednesday, May 21st to the stage for a special night, a part of a five show run on his Fotografias Tour across The United States and hitting some of the largest venues and cities in America. Rubén Blades Bellido de Luna is a singer, composer, actor, activist, and politician born in Panama City. Before diving deep into his musical talents, Blades sought to become a politician and studied politics and law at Universidad Nacional de Panamá, where he earned multiple degrees. He later moved to the U.S. and made his first records while living in New York, his first solo album being De Panamá a New York. A few years after moving, he landed major success with his album Metiendo Mano. He then began to work with multiple musicians in the Latin music scene in NYC, including Larry Harlow, Ray Barretto, Mon Rivera, and The Fania All Stars. In 1978, a year after Metiendo Mano, his album Siembra went on to be the best selling Salsa album to date – selling over 3 million copies, and becoming a phenomena for dance culture in a plethora of Latin American countries.
Because of Rubén’s hard work and activeness in the New York and Latin American musical scene, he propelled to stardom and began to work with the greats across all genres. He’s collaborated with Usher, Ricky Martin, Julio Iglesias, Shakira, Luis Miguel, and Michael Jackson - to name a few. He has also won twelve Grammys, and has had his music streamed over a billion times - boasting over 5 million monthly listeners on mainstream Spotify and Apple Music. Blades is synonymous with Salsa and música de latinoamérica. His influence is inescapable, and that’s why it’ll be such a treat to see him rocking on stage at The Texas Trust CU this May.
