Mexico is not a country well-known for stand-up comedy. In fact, the country is only seeing the first rise of the scene. However, comedy is a big part of the Mexican culture, which made it easier for stand-up comedians to sprout in the entertainment industry. Currently, the Mexican stand-up scene is dominated by "stand-uperos" (a nickname given to stand-up comics), who are culturally transforming the country's comedy landscape. Many people are behind this cultural change, and among the most notable is Franco Escamilla.
Escamilla is known for deviating from Mexico's stand-up scene. He is called "El Amo del Sarcasmo" (The Master of Sarcasm), which says so much about his style. He is a master of sarcastic quips and dark humor. This is different from the scripted jokes and cartoonish characters common among Mexican performers. However, his true deviation is in his approach to appeal more internationally. This can be seen in his career, which treads the line of both comedy and music. As his stand-up career rose, so did his music, noted for acoustics and heavily mixed modern and traditional sound. Another is his dream to become an established TV host, similar to the popular comedians in the US. He already achieved this as he hosted The Franco Escamilla Show on a Spanish-American TV channel. Great strides also occurred in his career when he appeared in multiple Comedy Central episodes and had his comedy specials ( "Comedians of the World," "For the Anecdote," "Welcome to the World," and "Eavesdropping" streamed on Netflix.
When Escamilla is not on TV or doing music, he usually is on tour. This year, he is headlining "1995," a tour dedicated to that nostalgic year. As usual, this is going to be a dark, sarcastic, and relatable storytelling.
The tour will bring him back to the Texas Trust CU Theatre on June 8. If you are looking for satirical humor, this is for you. Do not miss the hilarious Franco Escamilla and be entranced by his charm and dark humor. You can now get tickets for this show. You can do so by clicking the Get Tickets button.
